Gameplay

A typical day of a test match consists of three sessions. Each session is for 2 hours. Following each session, there is a 40-minute break. A typical day of test cricket consists of 90 overs. Sometimes, certain weather conditions can alter the number of overs.

The two teams play four innings and bat and bowl twice each. At the start of the match, there is a toss. Then, the winning team chooses either batting or bowling.

Further, in a test match, a team's innings can end when all batsmen are out, the overs are over, or the team captain of the batting team has declared that the innings have ended, if the time allotted ends, or if the team batting in the 4th innings reaches the target score.

If, after Team B's first innings, Team A leads by at least 55% of the runs scored by Team A in the first innings, the captain might order Team B to bat again and put up a target for Team A to chase. In such a case, the 'Follow On' Rule acts.

ODI came up with one-day international matches to remove the boredom of test cricket and organize games that could have their results on the same day.

England and Australia played the first ODI match in 1971 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Earlier, ODI matches used a white kit and a red ball. But, now they use colored equipment and a white ball. Further, the matches occur at night under floodlights.

Gameplay

Additionally, in ODIs, each team bats for 50 overs. Earlier, the number of overs was 60, but now it has been fixed at 50 since 2001.

The ODI match consists of two innings. The team winning the toss chooses to bat or bowl first. The first team sets the target for the second team. Then, the first innings continue till all the batsmen are out, or the overs are exhausted.

The second team chases the target score to win the match. Similarly, the first team tries to bowl out the second team or stop them from making runs. The first team tries to exhaust the number of overs of the second team before they get close to the target.

If the number of runs scored by both teams at the end of the innings, the game is declared a tie.

In cases where a match is affected by weather conditions, a rule called DLS or Duckworth Lewis method is used to progress the game is fair on either side. Then, the run rate is calculated by the wickets remaining in hand.
