But after a series of dissolutions and mergers of multiple ice hockey leagues, National Hockey League was the only contender in the inter-league tournament to win the Stanley Club. Since then, the teams winning the championship title in the NHL seasons have been awarded the Stanley Cup. 

When NHL started out, only four teams competed in the league. All these teams were based in Canada. It wasn’t until 1924 that the league expanded and got its first United States-based team, the Boston Bruins. The league had six teams, popularly dubbed as ‘Orignal Six’, competing for the Stanly Cup from 1942 to 1967.

After 1967, there were multiple expansions to include more teams in the National Hockey League. With the most recent addition in 2021, thirty-two professional ice hockey clubs compete in the NHL for the Stanley Cup.
